Gentlemen:

Last evening, Feb. 25, 2010, Detective George Lawson was interviewed by CBS channel 5 regarding illegal drug trafficking in Fort Smith & environ.  Not a word in the local newspaper today.  When arrests are made for various offenses and the perpetrators are found to be illegal, why is the public generally not made aware of their status?

Det. Lawson explained that the illegal drugs and their carriers had their genesis in Mexico and said drugs entering our city are on the increase; indicating that this perhaps could be Mexican National drug distribution center.  I believe that the distribution center was said, but I could be wrong on that statement.

I am particularly interested in why you gentlemen, elected and hired, refuse to discuss the illegal Mexican invasion both in persons, illegal drugs, and any number of other illegal issues?

You all treat the issue of illegal immigration as a “third rail” as it applies to the landscape of social services and illegal activities, but importantly the negative marks it is making on our children, schools, neighborhoods, jobs, law enforcement, healthcare…the latest example, the Mexican government demanding that UAMS educate and expand medical services to illegal Mexican nationals.

Why haven’t you, as a body, contacted numerous state and federal officials regarding the devastation being saddled on citizens?  Are you protecting those businesses & corporations hiring illegals?  Are you fearful, if so, of what?  Are you so engrossed in Political Correctness that you refuse to uphold existing laws, namely 8 USC immigration laws?  (you have been sent copies several times)

Your silence on the issues of drug trafficking, gangs, human trafficking, identity theft, incarceration, etc. does not generate the trust and confidence of citizens.

How about some honest, open discussion on the subject of illegal immigration and its effects on our community without using the worn-out canard, “it’s a federal responsibility”.

Kindest regards,

Joe McCutchen
